Diversity, Inclusion & Safeguarding
Diversity
Diversity matters at TENT.
We welcome all kinds of people and are a safe space for our local LGBTQ+ and non-binary friends.
Everyone at TENT have our own stories and come with our own issues, lots of us are neuro-diverse, some of us have physical differences, many of us have faced mental health challenges, including feeling suicidal and some have survived abuse.
We encourage everyone to be their real selves at TENT, but we also expect people to be held accountable when they get things wrong.
TENT has a zero policy for hate speech of any kind, including, but not exclusively based on gender, sexuality, trans status, non-binary identity, physical, mental, or invisible disability, class, employment status, body shaming, intelligence or education.
Inclusion
TENT is an inclusive space. We are fully inclusive in the cafe and even our bathroom is inclusive.
There are sometimes good reasons to offer groups or support to specific people, for example our neuro-divergent women's group, or the Silver Foxes group for men. Similarly, we have times when upstairs is a women only space, for example when working with someone who has been assaulted or abused, or when there is a session specifically for women. Sometimes we limit who is upstairs because there are children's sessions running. There is ALWAYS a reason for working with a specific group, whether we tell you what it is or not, but most of the time it will be to help everyone feel as safe as possible.
Safeguarding
We take safeguarding extremely seriously at TENT and we are aware of the difference this makes to our visitors and group members. We strive to keep everyone safe, children and adults, especially those who are particularly vulnerable. Our policy document is long and wordy because it must cover a lot of stuff, but our summary is simple:
- Keep children and adults safe
- promote well-being and welfare
- report abuse and neglect
- respond to any concerns raised Our Safeguarding lead is Victoria Markham and she is our first contact for safeguarding concerns.
